120 kilometers north of today's capital of
Bangkok, lies its ancient counterpart, Ayutthaya. Where today all that is left is a collection
of ancient ruins, there was once a great city here, which was
the capital of an empire for over 400 years. Founded by King U Thong in 1350, the impressive city grew to a population of
300,000 inhabitants. Between 1600 and 1700 the population swelled
to one million, making it one of the largest cities in the
world at the time. Looking around the extensive ruins, it is
certainly not hard to imagine that this was once a thriving and important
city, with many fascinating buildings to explore. Ayutthaya was destroyed by the Burmese Army
in 1700, and is in modern times a significant tourist
attraction, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site. Ayutthaya is easily accessible, with visitors being able to travel from Bangkok
by car, train, boat, or bus. Once there, the easiest way to get between
the various attractions of the site is by hiring a bike and following
the marked routes, or by motoring around in a tuk-tuk. At the end of a big day of taking in the sights
and history of this remarkable tourist destination, visitors can enjoy relaxing in the surrounding
open markets and filling up on the delicious local cuisine. This thriving tourist center is surrounded
by plenty of markets and places to eat.
