welcome to Halebidu my name is Rangaswamy, i am the tourism Department licensed Guide this is a Hoysala temple Hoysalas have built 92 temples across Karnataka among them famous ones are Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura temple these are very famous Vishnuwardhana was the main King, he constructed the Belur temple this was built by his minister his name was KetuMalla he was a Shiva devotee, in memory of King and Queen he built this temple. there are two shiva lingas, one is in Kings name and one is in Queens side Santhaleshwara is Queens name and Hoysaleshwara is the KIngs name within one temple there are two temples, this is a twin temple in Sanskrit this is known as dwikuta Hoysala temples are made as made as Kutas Belur is known as Ekakuta which means a single temple, this is double temple somanathapura is trikuta, its three temples within one this way hoysalas have made kutas this temple construction was started in 1121 Belur was in 1117 there is four years difference between both but Belur is single temple and was completed in 103 years but this is double temple and they worked for 190 years on this but work is not complete as you can see here see the corner work is not finished, when the temple work was going on Mallik Khafur had attacked this temple Allauhdin Khilji his General came and attacked this temple twice once in 1310 and next in 1326 then they destroyed this temple and the palace which was here see all this was damaged they had two intentions. one they were Muslims they did not want Hindu temple to exist , the other reason was back then they used to keep money and jewelry in temple,not in bank. so to loot that wealth they used to keep gold underneath the statues when installing the statue they used to keep Gold coins underneath it with an intention of plundering and taking away the wealth they attacked and plundered the place, they even destroyed his village hence it was known as Haala da bidu (The spoilt house) later came to be known as Halebidu what was its known before? It was known as Dwarasamudhra or Dwaraka nagara this was the capital of Hoysalas there is a lake here, now there is no water in it. when it fills it appears like a sea its almost 800 acers that was at the doorway of the village, the sea so both together Dwara (Doorway) Samaudhra (Sea) became the name of the village later Haala da bidu (The spoilt house) became Halebidu See this temples eastern side there are 11 lines first is the elephants line second row is of the lion, third is flower climbers fourth is the horses, these four are important part of this temple first is the elephants, the animal that carries the maximum weight is elephant this temples weight is being carried by the elephant, indicating such they have carved the elephants there this stone is chalk/ Soap stone this is found here as well as in Tumkur District’s Turuvekere area, they got this stone from there to get it here they did not have lorry or crane only with the help of Elephants it was got here as a mark of gratitude for it, they have carved the elephants around this temple there are 1248 elephants it doubles 1-2-4-8 but none of them are similar notice there is movement in the elephants and for a King it is said that he should have all these four qualities in him Elephant is a symbol of strength lion symbolizes courage flower climbers symbolize decoration horse symbolizes quickness this shows that a King should have all these four qualities this is the story of Samudra Mantana Ksheera sagara Mantana see here Rakhsasas churned the ocean holding the head side the Gods churned the ocean holding the tail side Vasuki snake was used as a rope making a churner out of Mandara Mountains, they are churning the milk of Ocean to get the Amrutha(The drink to achieve immortality ) when churning they did not have support of this mountain as it started sinking, Vishnu took the second Avatar(Form) of turtle or kurma and lifts the mountain turtle here the statues are damaged this animal is known as Makara it is an imaginary animal they combined 7 animals to make one animal seven animals have been joined it is an imaginary animal its name is makara, see it has a pig’s body, lions legs crocodile mouth elephants trunk cow ears monkey eyes peacock tail this way 7 animal body has been joined the sign marka it is that animal above that is Brahmas vehicle swan above that is the musicians and dancers above that is love positions In our life there are four elements. this is Dharma is represented in these four rows these are the meanings Kama is a part of our life above that is Moksha, symbolized by ventilation Moksha or absence of everything for the purpose of light and ventilation inside this temple, that ventilation has been created see all 11 lines across this temple are same this is a moral story of liquor see even in 12th century they used to brew liquor local liquor, there are three trees from which liquor was make this is Baine-mara or Fish-Tail Palm tree eechala mara or Phoenix sylvestris tree and coconut tree they have collect the liquor and kept it in a pot the moral story is that the Guru of the Rakshasas Sukracharya he is a sadhu, those who do not drink liquor were known as sadhu see here is a crow sitting on the pot this is the crow this crow is drinking drop by drop a little if we drink liquor our mind starts floating like the crow if you drink fully, here you can see a snake, those who drink fully their thoughts and actions become piousness like the snake this is applicable not only for liquor but human should not indulge in excess in anything, too much is too bad So those who do not consume liquor is Sadhu even if one drinks little then his thoughts start floating like the crow oh that means even we are sadhus now many drink they compare this and sadhu in Sanskrit there is a saying that anything excess is poisonous if you consume excess of amrutha even that will become poisonous this is the moral story they have depicted here, that nothing show be indulged in excessively it will become poisonous for 190 years work was done to construct this temple but work is not finished first how they used to work, there would be a plan such plain stone were got they would make pieces of these stones and then arrange then step by step they would arrange one piece like this see the sketch they have made, a draft of what is to be made see here the work has started after the work is finished, this is the final look by then the attack happened and the work was stopped see here they have arranged the stone here till here work needs to be before independence there was no security at this place local people used to come here and see what they have done they have made groves in the stone to play, they had damaged all this even now if you pull this it will break this is soap stone, it is soft so easily gets damaged that is why the board has been put that not to touch these carvings in order to maintain the place here inside there are two Shiva lingas Shivas vehicle Nandi also there are two this is one and there is another In India there are thousands of such Nandis, among them seven were measured for their height and Size by Archaeology Department. In India First biggest is at Lepakshi in Andhara Pradesh. Second is in Tanjavur Tamil Nadu third is the one at Mysore Chamundi Hills fourth is at Bangalores Basavanagudi Bull Temple is fifth is at Rameshwaram Tamil Nadu sixth one is the one there and this is the seventh biggest, that is 9 feet tall, carved out of a single stone this is 8 feet tall and also carved out of a single stone in height this is seventh but in decoration this is first in India decoration- see this is the flower chain see the necklaces, see the bell chains big as well as small ones see in stone they have made a crown you can see the veins in its face notice the mirror kind of polish, you can see the reflection it has been 900 years since this temple was built but still the mirror kind of polish is intact here you can see the folds and wrinkles of the skin, this looks natural This is the Queens temple, so they have compare the girl to decoration, sringara(ornamental beauty) this Nandi too has been decorated that is Kings Nandi, so the height has been increased by one feet this Nandis decoration is very beautiful, here local people muslims have written Mohammed Khan written in Urdu up there H L has also been written as security was not there, our own people have spoilt it that is why every where these barricades have been placed and maintained there is the shiva linga, Shantaleshwara, Queens name only one priest is there there are two shiva lingas there for Hoysaleswara also he does the pooje this temple is of Hoysalas and has three parts in it where the shiva linga is kept that is the Garbhagudi one, second is the prayer or the place from where you view god(Darshana Mantapa) this is Navaranga or the Dancing stage Queen Shantala Devi used to do Bharatanatyam through her dance she used to worship god the dancers you can see here, known as Shilabalike and madarikas 84 statues as such were there in this temple out of which only 14 are here remaining 70 was removed and taken away by the British during their rule in India as you can see each pillar had four statues 70 good ones they took away, remaining 14 are damaged see here the hands are broken there the head is broken, in this both hands and legs are broken only these 14 destroyed ones are here those 70 statues you can see them at London at Albert and Victoria Museum here remaining are the gaps inside this temple there are 108 pillars 108 pillars but each one is different this is Shiva temple, shiva nataraja used to dance in 108 ways so 108 pillars these pillars are five piece joints first is this the peeta, second is from here to there, that is the Kamba that round part is Kumba, fourth is Katti Katti means the waist part next it the weight holder, the temples weight is resting on that part five piece is joined together, in Sanskrit it is knkown as Panchashilastamba Means five piece joint, then they did not use cement work they used to make a hole in between the stone from up the way we fit a bulb they would fit the stone and lock it interlock system, the whole temple can be dismantled and joined back together it can be refitted, just like the holes here, those statues can be removed but government, it can be removed, there is cement plastering that is it this can be removed too, see here how it is removed but temple cement plasting work has been done, where there are gaps it has been filled here you can see that the work is not complete it is not complete they have made the sketch here, because attack happened when inside work of temple was going on that is why belur temple inside it it beautiful and Halebidu temple is beautiful outside that is why the saying, that see belurs inside and Halebidus outside beauty more story is outside so there is nothing much special inside this temple no much, not like Belur, inside belur its beautiful this temple was constructed by a minister he collected donation and from it he constructed this temple this is the inscription of the donation received this is in two languages above it is written in Sanskrit, here is Olden Kannada inscription of Donation this carving is 900 yrs olden as it is soapstone, inscriptions are getting erased this is also known as shilasashana in this i had told you there are two temples, in that that side is one temple this side is another temple previously both were separate, when it was joined inside this there is nothing, this is just a store there was a statue in it but was taken away since it is dark now, it has been used as a store. Which statue was here? even we do not know, as long ago these statues were taken away under all statues they used to keep gold all that gold and statues from all theses Mantapas have been stolen since this was empty we closed to use as a store room see this is incomplete this is a small mantapa inside and outside the temple there are 42 such mantapas in all 42 statues are not there, it has been stolen due to greed for gold where ever there was a statue underneath would be gold. Local people also have taken away the gold by removing the statue all was empty, so government in 1952 took over and a statue they found somewhere was brought and kept here this is not the original statue, this statue was found elsewhere, this is shiva nataraja this is not complete, they have done cement plasting and kept this here only in 4-5 place where there is light they have placed few statues, rest all are empty this is holysaleshwara , that is shanthaleshwara this is shiva temple and these are Shivas Dwarapalakas Nandi and Brungi Vishnu temple in Belur has Jay and Vijaya as Dwarapalakas here Nandi Brungi are the Dwarapalakas see how nicely the jewelry has been done, we cannot do the same in gold this is Kantaha for the neck, necklace, shoulder piece crown, look at the skull on the crown Shiva is known as the one who resides in crematorium his jewelry is made of skull, on a single stone so may different kind of works have been done this is a single piece it is hollow inside the hands are damaged this is the helper yes this is hollow, inserting of anything into it has been prohibited since inserting sticks leads to breaking of the statues intricate work that is why no one is allowed to touch it, only allowed to see it here if you put the stick through the mouth it will come through the eye if you put it through the eyes it comes from the ear it also comes ear to ear ear to ear inside it is completely hollow even in between the crown there is gap she is the helper the one who moves the fan that is her fan inside the decoration is of a flower climber its the creeper decoration, you can see it is hollow inside we cannot even recreate this in paper cutting it is hollow here it is broken here, soap stone when pulled breaks the specialty of this stone is that when you take it out from earth it will be soft like soap easy to work on, it later hardens when in contact with weather since its 900 years old, it is hard these pillars when they were made, there were no machines they would put a rope around the stone and hold it they would spin this stone using elephant that way the stone would wear and tear they would spin as per the design they wanted, if they wanted it to be sharp they would use horse and turn the stone fast this would cause the sharp edges elephant and horse were used the way use Lathe country lathe they would spin the stone this is soap stone since it is soft a rope was enough to make the mark they would stop when the desired effect was achieved these were made using elephants and horses here all it is damaged see here the pillar is not finished, but work had started but in that pillar work had not started inside work is incomplete outside is beautiful see here inside we had seen the Dwarapalakas, same are here, Nandi and Brungi but here the workmanship is better than the ones inside even in jewelry it is as if using small pins the designs have been made the hands are damaged department tried to join new hands to these but couldn’t as this is one single stone even when other stone was attached it would easily come apart they tried and gave up see this face they have done it new, this had got damaged that face was like this they smoothed it out and then made it such see its nose, it has become a Tibetan nose this kind of inappropriate look to avoid this the hand was not fixed you can notice the difference between the face and the crown now they can not do why because this temple has 4 main entrance this is south entrance, you came from North eastern part the two nandis were there this is the royal entrance, the Kings used to come by this entrance a palace was here a half kilometer from here the attackers destroyed the palace only little bit of foundation is left that is it when they used to come first they would worship Ganesha next the emblem of the Hoysalas they would worship that and then come in this is the royal entrance that is why the detail work here is very nice and that is why they have tried to do extra work here but they couldn’t so they have left it at that see above the entrance is the decoration above the entrance door the stone is 9 feet wide and 3 feet high it is a single stone on the sides are Makara in between is Shiva Nataraja Belur also this is similar, only change is it is Vishnu temple, So Vishnu is in the center this is shiva temple so Shiva is in the center this is known as torana, very nice detailed work before we begin any work we pray to Ganesha the sculptures also make the Ganesha first the work starts from here notice the mouse, it is small but Ganesha is big, his weight is more for his dancing weight, the mouse has opened his mouth his legs are bent the place where its leg is place notice the earth caving in the mouse is holding the earth in its nails the sculpture in his imagination has shown this is Ganeshas brother Subramanya also known as Karthika, Shanmuga, Muruga he is seated on his vehicle Peacock, they both are brothers from here the work was started here the Trimoorties (Three gods) Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu in all temples Vishu will be in the center Since this is Shivas temple, shiva has been given importance in English we say as GOD G means Generator O means Operator or Organizer D means Destroyer Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, and Shiva is the Destroyer see these kind of designs have been damaged here even here it is broken such design was supposed to be there, but it is broken see here the hands are broken, even here even here it is broken in Shiva temples shiva is installed in the middle see on the left hand is the rudrakshi, prayer or Meditation bead and on the right hand is corn the prayer or meditation bead is a symbol of knowledge Corn is the symbol of prosperity Bhrama is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, Siva the destroyer this is Uma Maheshwara, Shiva Parvathi Parvathi has two forms when in Kali or Durga form her vehicle is Lion this is the calm form so when in Uma form the vehicle is Mangoose Uma Maheshwara look at her hairstyle its curly hairstyle, there was no beauty parlor in those days yet they have shown these designs see her ear ring its inside is hollow all around this temple there is 242 hair styles but each one is different seeing this now a days they do in the beauty Parlor This in Mahabharata is Draupadis Swayamvara Arjuna shooting the eye of the fish by looking at the reflection of it in the oil Here the local people aimed sharper than arjuna and damaged the arrow local people have also destroyed the statues this all was damaged by locals and children would put their finger and pull it apart this is Govardhana, Sri Krishna holding the Govardhana Hill it rains for one week everyday life is disturbed, Krishna lifts up the mountain in this mountain, the sculpture has show the things within it you can see a banana tree there, in it you can see the banana bunch next to it is a monkey climbing a tree a lion going inside the cave, only one fourth is visible outside the head part has gone in a man climbing a mountain a hunter holding bow and arrow, hunting a pig peacock is visible here lizard is visible , here snakes are coming out what all is there in the mountain all that is shown here one more specialty here is there are three people, so there should be 6 legs, but here for three people there is only four legs which ever side you see, every person will have tow legs the person in the center holding the stick his legs are straight on the right side you can see the person holding the drum he too has two legs, and the one on other side also has two legs everyone has two legs but in total there are only 4 legs this is like 2 by 4 coffee very nicely they have done this this also very nice this is Gajasura the Rakshasa in the form of elephant Shiva kills the elephant and dances inside the elephant stomach He dances inside the stomach of the elephant the body is fully opened see front portion you can see the head and back portion you can see the leg and tail the whole skin you can see due to the force of opening, Shivas sharp nails piercing the skin of the elephant comes out see the sharpness of the nail now a days girls grow their nails sharp like this for style from his nails he has split the elephant Gajasamhara these both are very nice they are not damaged all these are empty among the 42 this is one local people have spoilt this more previously villagers had broken it, but now people are writing names on it and have scratched it Vishnus third Avtar Varaha Hiranyaakshu Rakshasa being killed, bhodevi being carried by Varaha Vishnu takes the form of Varaha and rescues Bhoo devi by carrying her on his shoulder and kills Hiranyaksha by stamping him due to the pressure his eye balls has popped out the helper Rakshashas chest being pierced with the gadha. the tip of the gadha protruding on the other side that side is pointed, this side it has come out along with his intestines and pierced using the other hand this is done using the imagination we cannot even do it on paper they have depicted it on stone total there are 20 thousand statues big and small put together and for every stone there is a story, only important once i am telling you this is Vishnus Fourth avatar, Narasimha hiranyakasup lying on his lap, Narasimha rips opens his stomach takes out his intestines and wears it like a garland this is damage, see the hands are broken In Belur this is nice, here it is broken the helper Rakshasas face skin has been ripped open the way the banana skin is peeled for that force the eye ball come out attached to the skin This avatar has lot of anger, hence known as UgraNarasimha this was very nice, if it was not broken this is Shiva Parvathi Peeta (Seat) See the seat is little bent this is not due to stone or sculptures mistake in 12th century Patriarchal society was there here Even thought Parvathi is sitting on Shivas Lap the weight is more on this side but now this is reverse from here the view of the temple is very nice the wall carving has lot of details two temples can be seen perfectly, that is one temple, this is one temple see here you can see that both are separate from inside it may appear small, this is Dwikuta temple this temple is built in star shape the more the corners in the star shape more the statues can be placed in inside the wall the light and air also will circulate within the temple and the weight of the temple also get evenly distributed for it to survive for long, the star shape temple was built Belur is a single temple 32 corners are there in Belur this is double temple so there are 64 corners in this temple was their a gopura above this? that was not complete this temple was not complete, only when the temple is complete will there be a gopura this Narasimha statue is repeated again it repeats 14 times since it is it is Hoysalas family god you can see the intestines ripped off, but its all damaged here is a story of Prahalada he is a Vishnu Devotee his father is a Vishnu hater, no matter how much father tries to get his son out of his Devotion, he does not succeed he sends his son with the soldiers to be killed He gets him bitten by poisonous snakes he gets him stamped by elephants he is put in fire the fire god appears infront of him later he is pushed down a mountain yet he does not die, he continues to meditate when asked show where is your god his father shows him a pillar and asks is he in this pillar he says yes, so he kicks the pillar when he kicks it Narasimha appears in that pillar that sculpture in two inches has shown the Narasimha avatara this is the speciality it is one inch width and two inch height such small Narasimha is not found anywhere else in very small statue Narasimha has been carved later he comes out and kills him but here local people have killed him itself this is very soft it will break if they pull like this, thats why no one is permitted to touch, only to see everywhere there is Narasimha yes because it is Hoysalas family god the shiva linga which you saw inside, when they do abhisheka the water comes out from here this is a single piece stone, which is 18 feet long all the way from here to Garbhagudi when they do abhisheka there water will come here this is known as Makara Pranala this is a hole this is Mahabharata War of Kurukshetra, war between Arjuna and Karna the arrows used by Arjuna is known as Akshaya Arrow it multiplies how to identify Arjuna is there is the Flag with a monkey Hanuma dwaja(Monkey flag) Karna will have the Kaage (crow) flag in this situation, one soldier is piercing another and it has come out from the other point and has touched the horses head they have done detailed work this are the arrows Akashaya arrow which keeps multiplying Kali form, Bhairavi notice the garland of skulls in the hand is the chopped head of a Rakshasa blood dripping from it and the dog licking that drops of blood that is due to the tongue being cut to betalas(demons) are making music and as per the music made by them another betala(demons) is dancing notice how neat the ribs are this is story of Bali Chakravarthy Bali is known for giving charity, Vishnu comes in his fifth avatara of Vaamana and asks for three footsteps place in charity, rakshasas Guru Shukracharya says not to give charity yet he give the charity, here is a moral story that the one who gives is always big the one who seeks charity is a little smaller than him the one who says dont give charity, although he is a guru, yet he become smaller than all this is the moral story, Vishnu comes as a dwarf and here comes the real form here the form grows bigger and takes three steps one step is in he covers the entire earth next step he covers the sky See here Bramha is washing Vishnus feet that water is flowing in the form of a river to symbolise river they have shown fish see here is a tortoise the waves on the water Vishnus vehicle Garuda is seated here third step they have not shown as there is no place he takes his fourth step on the Bali Kings head and pushes him into the core of the earth that day is known as Balipadyami or Deepawali they have not shown that here, the leg lifted up here you can see the folds of the lower garment they have not shown the third step the judge judge means full coat, long coat coat with collar in the right hand is Dharma Danda(Stick), Dharma chakra(circle) in the left hand and wig on the head, we call this the British judge British came to India in 16th we jump when we jump on speed breakers when we go on a bike she tells him to go slow In the war Krishna wins and gets the flower this is the story of Parijatha notice the strings used to tie the Drums this is similar to this days Nylon thread it has been 900 years since this was carved i the stone you can see the nylon rope type See the beauty of Shanthalas Dance Bharatanatya, Bha means Bhava (emotions), ra means raaga, ta means taala. if these three are there only then it is Bharatanatya even if one is missing in it then it becomes Betala (demon) dance like the way Upendra dances look at kalis bent legs you can see the wrinkles you can see the folds notice the toe ring in her finger so much details are there this is chennakesava, in Belur there is a similar statue which is the main statue the handsome Krishna see this is the center part of both the temple that side is one temple this side is one temple remember the store room i had showed you, it was used to join both of these few statues repeat here, see here is Harihara see half shiva and half Vishnu Shivas trishula , damaru, his vehicle NandiVishnus Shanka, gadhe chakra, his vehicle Garuda they have put the sketch but have not made it the work is not complete, this is hari, that is hara, their son is Aiyyappa this is in ramayana is the story of Valis killing, they are brothers Vali and sugriva no one can fight from the front and win from Vali this is the gift granted to him by sun god who ever fights him from front , his half power will come to Vali that is the boon he had received see rama is standing behind seven Banana plants and shooting the arrow that arrow pierces all seven plants and goes forward this arrow was poisonous as a snake Saarpastra, that arrows name the arrow, they have carved the snake to symbolize as to power of the arrow sapta tala cheida it is said in Ramayana See statue of Kalabhairava Nagnatala bhirava, right hand there is a wheel that is the gear box which you can see in now a days cycles but cycle was invented in 17th century but in 12th century the wheel was used there is one inside and one outside, same like gear box its used as Kala chakra Here Narasimha statue repeats again 14 times it repeats and shiva is here, can you see on the left side the skull that is Kapala danda in that a snake goes inside the eyes and comes out of the ears it is fully hollow snake can pass, here too it is there, it goes from the ear and comes out of another ear each one they have done differently this is knkown as Kapal danda the locals have made these marks on the floor, they used to use it to play games even this has been destroyed by locals the monkeys trouble we say see here the monkey troubling see a beautiful lady is draping a saree, the monkey is pulling the saree to hit it the lady is jumping to take stick from the climber as she jumps you can see the gap between her footwear and her feet see the saree border design near her waist the embroidery design in one hand she is holding her saree’s pallu, one more hand she is trying to take the stick if one hand is lifted, you can see the wrinkles of the stomach skin they have showed those skin folds this story says that when you see a beautiful girl man’s mind becomes like a monkey feels like troubling her see this Narasimha statue is repeated again here you can see the stomach being ripped and the hand inside the stomach here the garland is broken see the fingers holding the thigh, the fingers are going inside the thigh notice the grip of the hand on the crown see the grip of the legs for the waist here operation was a success but patient died the intention was to kill the patient here In Mahabharata is the story of Chakravuha they were fighting Abhimanyu abhimanyu knows only to go in but does not know to come out this technique is known only to three people Krishna, arjuna and Dronacharya the one who creates this is Dronacharya, his flag is Kumba Dwaja(Flag) Kumbodbhava they say for Dronacharya flag is of Kumba those who know the technique, all three are on one side along with Dronacharya Arjuna was fighting the war Krishna was the riding Arjunas chariot with half knowlege he
