As human beings we are, at our very centre, team players. Collaboration is part of our DNA. The world’s social creatures. Who walk a journey of common cause and strive for better, together. At the University of Surrey we embrace and celebrate teamwork. We are a place defined by a culture of collaboration. A powerful partnership of teaching and research, that blends together cutting edge facilities, fiercely ambitious students and world renowned academics. Our story belongs to all of us. Not punctuated by the monuments of the few, but written by incredible feats of collaboration. Breakthroughs – brought by teams of brilliant individuals and built upon the broad shoulders of those who innovated before us. And so – like every year 2018 reminds us that we are not simply a collection of people and places, but a team, marked by the many fingerprints of collaboration. More than the sum of our parts; we are the University of Surrey. In 2018, it was collaboration that gave us the edge as we connected our expertise across departments, becoming the first to fuse Blockchain with Artificial Intelligence, for a safer digital age. It’s our close connections with global business that continue to provide the best student placement opportunities available. We encourage broad discussions. Debates that span across continents. We hosted the UK’s only Falling Walls Lab, an international forum for the next generation of innovators to share and help bring down the walls that restrict our world. This was the year we also looked past our campus, to partner with our local community. We shared our knowledge with King’s College Guildford, working to rewrite the rules of education, lifting the bar of excellence to new heights, together. Collaboration has helped us make history. We raised a glass to applaud the Surrey Hills’ natural beauty; marking its story in the record books and honored the commitment of one of Guildford’s most extraordinary citizens. And we move outward beyond the town in which we live and that we love. Globally. It was through the words of inter-faculty collaboration that we became the UK’s voice in the global 5G race. We sat alongside renowned professors from across the university while they shared their views on how we will work, live, play and learn in tomorrow’s world. Then upward – to Space. September 2018 saw the launch of a groundbreaking consortium to help remove the man made debris that surrounds our planet. And finally, we are looking onward to 2019, when we partner with the University of Wollongong in Australia, uniting global University leaders from over 41 countries, sharing our thoughts and opinions at the Young Universities Summit. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished this year, but the years ahead show that there’s still much to do. We are reinvigorating our student experience to mirror Surrey’s outstanding teaching, with new accommodation and event space opening up across our lively campus. We’re providing state-of-the-art facilities, enhancing the Surrey experience with new student-led initiatives such as HIVE and MySurrey. A home, both on and offline, for students, built by students. Whilst looking further still, we will take the next steps with our School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, planning our 200-bedroom learning hotel; a hotbed for collaboration across the University. Year on year we continue to grow and collaboration plays a huge part in that, at all levels. So, whether it be students tackling world-changing ideas together, joining our community to make a real difference, or indeed, the groundbreaking work of an entire faculty of hard-working staff; it is all borne from the same belief. The belief of being better. Together. Because we are, and always have been. The University of Surrey.

  1. May I ask why the rankings are dropping yearly? I have an offer but I’m worried about the universities place in the league tables as it’s decreasing every year 🤧
